Kolos Plans Data Center in Arctic Norway to Tap Renewable Power

August 14, 2017

U.S.-Norwegian company Kolos is planning to build a data center in northern Norway to make use of the area’s abundance of renewable hydropower.

The center in Ballangen will be powered by hydroelectric power and take advantage of the cold climate to help to reduce the cost of cooling servers, the company said. Facebook Inc. started data center operations at its new facility across the border in Lulea, Sweden in 2013.

“The potential is over 1,000 megawatt, which would be the largest in the world,” Havard Lillebo, Co-CEO at Kolos, said by phone. It will be built in several phases over “many years,” he said.
